One day about two moths ago I was scrolling on my facebook but when I saw an ad for “The Ration Challenge”, intrigued I clicked to see more. It didn’t take me long to sign up after seeing what it was all about, helping and supporting Syrian Refugees.
Essentially what it is when you sign up you get sent a ration box which is what Syrian refugees are given and contain small amounts of rice, flour, lentils, chickpeas, beans, fish and oil. It is all about raising money which goes towards providing food, medicine and education for refugees. It’s also showing that we are with refugees not against them.
The sad part is that the ration boxes we receive to live off for one week are actually provided for a familie of six to live off for a whole month. It makes you realise how lucky we really are.
They try to make the challenge a bit more interesting by adding rewards that you can earn by raising a certain amount of money or by joining a group. If you make a donation to yourself you earn a spice of your choice to use which will make a huge difference to get a bit more flavour. Or if you raise $250 you earn unlimited salt (I was so happy when I got to $250!)
Everything is set up very well, you receive a recipe book and a meal plan for the 7 days to help you out. I would recommend making some of the recipes before you start so you know what to expect. They also created a facebook group which is really great because you have support and can ask any questions, it will also make it easier to get through the week when your tempted to go for a good hearty meal instead of sticking to the rations.
The challenge doesn’t start till the 16th of June and finishes on the 23rd so if you would like to join or read more go to the website here https://actforpeace.rationchallenge.org.au which has plenty of info. I have already raised some money and have put a donation jar with some information at the front counter at work. People have been interested and putting their spare change in which is great! If you’d like to donate my link is here https://my.rationchallenge.org.au/sharniclavarino any donations help a great cause.
Have you ever done something similar? How did you raise money and did you struggle?
